City Group is a leading business conglomerate that owns 50 percent share of Somoy Television. The Group has presence across several sectors, including food and edible oil, ship building, fiber, plastic, tea estate, printing, and packaging. The Group began its journey in 1972 with the establishment of City Oil Mills by City Group’s founder Fazlur Rahman.
City Group straddles across multiple sectors. Its major focus is consumer goods including food and edible oil. City Group owns five oil mill companies: City Oil Mill, City Vegetable Oil Mills Ltd. , Shampa Oil Mills Ltd., Farzana Oil Refineries Ltd. and Votto Oil Refineries Ltd. City Group’s most prominent brand with a footprint in edible oil, atta, flour, semolina, rice, lentil, sugar and animal feed products is Teer. Other consumer goods entities of City Group are City Auto Rice and Dal Mills Ltd., Shampa Flour Mills Ltd., City Sugar Industries Ltd, City Seed Crushing Industries Ltd.,Deepa Food Products Ltd. and Hasan Flour Mills Ltd.
In 2018 City Group started the operation of City Economic Zone which is situated in Rupganj, Narayanganj covering a total area of 78 acres.
City Group owns City Tea Estate Ltd. which has three tea gardens located in Srimongol and Chittagong. Bengal Tea is City Group’s tea brand.
City Group expanded its business in 2015 with the establishment of Khan Brothers Shipbuilding Ltd which builds seagoing vessels used for transportation of raw materials as well as finished goods.
City Group is owned by Fazlur Rahman and his family members. Fazlur holds the position of Chairman and Managing Director of the Group while his daughter Shampa Rahman is a director of the Group. She is also vice chairman of Dhaka Insurance Ltd.
On May 22, 2019, Dhaka South City Corporation’s Safe Food Inspector Kamrul Hasan filed a case against City Group Chairman Fazlur Rahman as the business group didn’t withdraw its products which were part of the 52 unsafe food items ordered to be removed from the market by the High Court. Later an arrest warrant was issued against him. On June 25, 2019 Fazlur Rahman surrendered and appealed before court. The court granted him bail taking into consideration his age.
In 2010, Narayanganj District Administration and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished illegal portions of various structures on the River Shitalalkkhya. The district administration however allowed 10 top business groups including City Group three months’ time to remove their structure at their own cost. In 2016, a delegation of BIWTA found evidence of grabbing river Shitalakkhya by City Group and issued notice to the company.
