RTV is a television channel owned by Bengal Media Corporation, which began transmission in 2007.
RTV’s license was initially given to Mosaddeq Ali. He sold the ownership to a controversial multilevel marketing company called Jubok for Tk 30 crore. But only 56 percent of the shares worth Tk 18 crore were given, according to Hossain Al Masum, who was the executive director of Jubok. During the army-backed caretaker government, the ownership of Jubok was handed over to the family of Morshed Alam of the Bengal Group without any payment. Morshed Alam is a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League. According to Prothom Alo’s report, Hussein Al Masum stated that Morshed Alam offered a compromise in exchange for Tk 10 crore, but they rejected it.
In another development, the Awami League government handed out several licenses for several private television channels in 2013 at the end of its tenure. The latest channel given license on political consideration was Channel 52. The license was given to the wife of Baharuddin Khelon, son of late Awami League leader Abdul Malek Ukil. And the Bengal Group provided him financial support. The Bengal Group now owns RTV.
Baharuddin was the Deputy Director (Message) of BTV. It is assumed that he did not have the financial means to run a TV channel and precluded from receiving a license for being a government official. Reportedly, Baharuddin brought the Bengal Group as a financier. He formed a company called ‘Bengal Television Channel Limited’. On October 1, 2013, the Ministry of Information gave the license Channel 52 in the name of this company. Baharuddin’s expatriate wife is the chairman of the channel. And Morshed Alam is the managing director (MD) of the Bengal Group. When contacted, both Morshed Alam and Baharuddin verified this information to Prothom Alo.
In October 2019, RTV organized a workshop jointly with the US embassy in Dhaka on “Indo-Pacific Strategy: An Overview for Journalists”. RTV also initiated a talent hunt in 2017 jointly with India-based company Dabur in Bangladesh. The competition was known as “RTV-DaburVatika Campus Star.”
